Head to Prom Solo and Have Fun | Fly Free with the Crew

Man, we have a love-hate relationship with prom. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that growing up, we had these wildly unrealistic goals ingrained from pop culture and movies.

Before we go and date ourselves, just check out this trailer from “she’s all that”. The nerd-turned-desirable trope is old - and quite frankly, gross. And this mentality of making prom this storytale-driven event adds a weird pressure to the whole thing.

We’re all frikkin’ worth it and should celebrate however we want. But the antiquated way of thinking leads to tons of guys skipping prom if they don’t have a date.

Look. Not everyone will have a date, and that’s cool. Tons of people go solo with their friends to prom. There’s even a survival guide to solo promming - try not to laugh, there’s some helpful stuff in there.

Don’t overthink it. It’s a celebration of sweating through four years of exams, competitions, hallway run-ins, practice, and clubs together - finish strong y’all!

Plus this is a great way to wrap up high school to usher in the next journey of your life!

Here are three reasons to head to prom solo.

Never Alone - Roll with Your Crew

When else are you going to have a chance to dress up like the Goodfellas? There’s something so cool about a group of guys wearing suits together - displaying the confidence and prowess of peak Robert DeNiro.

For maximum impact, roll in with matching black slim-fit suits - with crisp white shirts and bold ties to finish the look. And if you and the gang want to save some coin (who doesn’t these days?!), when you buy a suit, you get a shirt and tie for $20.23!

If you’re more into a relaxed look, here are a couple casual ideas.

Show Up for a Good Time

Like Drake on Blessings, you’re here for a good time, not a long time. High school is so short and there’s so much life ahead - make the most of it!

Everything is high stakes after high school. $5000+ semesters. A career. Eventually a family. A house… a mortgage… old age… becoming a grandparent… OMG are you sweating or is it just me?

Anyways, it should go without saying - savour this moment. Plus, you never know what will happen at prom. Without a date, you can intermingle with whomever you want, dancing with whomever you want.

Who knows, you may even find a date while there. The most important thing is to be relaxed and comfortable - if anything is killing your vibe, ditch it.

#1 Reason to Go to Prom Solo: Zero Obligation

The best reason to head to prom solo is that you’re not tied to anyone. Here’s just a few examples why having a date might be a drag:

  • You can leave early if your school decides to cheap out on the DJ - which is not unheard of.
  • You don’t have to be at the whim of anyone else that night.
  • You can dress how you want and not to match your prom date - this is a big plus if you’re a sneaker guy that just wants to wear fresh kicks.

Be You at Prom with Tip Top

Comfort and confidence are the most important aspects of any social gathering - and that includes prom. Back in the 1920s, when proms first began, it was a tool to teach social skills to graduating highschoolers so that they knew how to handle themselves in the real world.

If you find yourself wearing something, or hanging around people you're not so fond of, you may not feel your best. That’s why it’s important to find your crew and mingle with those that matter the most to you.
