Ties for Men, Picked for the Occasion
The occasion picks the tie. A wedding tie, a prom tie and an office tie do different jobs, so our ties for men are sorted by colour and pattern. Start with the event, then match the suit.
Wedding Ties for the Groom and Groomsmen
Wedding ties set the colour story for the whole wedding party. The groom usually wears a silk tie in a deeper shade, and the groomsmen match in a coordinated colour: navy, burgundy, sage green, teal, emerald or a soft champagne tie for summer weddings. Ties for weddings work best when every tie shares one colour family and one width.
Planning the whole party? Read which tie to wear on your wedding day, then build matching looks for every groomsman.
Ties for Prom, Grad and the Office
Ties for prom are where personality shows. A pink tie, a gold tie or a bright floral tie pairs with a date's dress; a black tie suits an all-black prom look. Our prom shop groups prom suits, neckties and accessories in one place.
Grad and office ties lean classic. A navy tie or a burgundy tie with a white dress shirt reads sharp in a boardroom presentation, at work meetings, at a grad dinner or on a date night. Solid ties in darker shades also carry a wedding toast, a Christmas party or a milestone birthday.
Solid Ties and Patterned Neck Ties
Every tie collection needs both solids and patterns. Solid ties match anything; patterned neck ties add texture and personality. Use the colour filters at the top of this page (black, blue, red, green, gold, pink, orange, white and grey) to narrow the neckties to your suit.
Navy, Burgundy and Black Ties That Match Any Suit
A navy tie, a burgundy tie and a black tie cover most suits in a man's closet. Navy matches a grey suit, a navy suit and a charcoal suit. Burgundy warms a navy suit or a blue suit. Black is formal, and it works with a black suit or tuxedo when a bow tie feels too formal.
Beyond the three basics, a green tie, a red tie, a silver tie or a gold tie adds colour for weddings and holidays. Keep one solid tie in each of these shades and your ties cover almost every occasion.
Paisley, Floral and Stripes
Patterned ties bring the prints. Paisley ties suit traditional suits and the office. Floral ties suit summer weddings and spring prom. Stripes and plaids read classic and polished, and small polka dots stay subtle enough for a presentation. Our essential tie patterns guide explains which patterns match which shirts.
Pattern rule of thumb: a patterned tie pairs with a solid shirt, and a solid tie pairs with a patterned shirt.
- Pick the tie colour from the suit.
- Match the pattern scale to the shirt: large paisley on a plain shirt, small prints on a checked shirt.
- Repeat one shade from the tie in the pocket square.

A tie is the smallest piece of the suit, and the one people look at first.
Silk Ties, Polyester and Woven Fabrics
Fabric decides how a tie looks, knots and lasts. Silk ties carry a natural sheen, knot cleanly and hold a dimple, which makes a silk tie the classic choice for a wedding, a tuxedo or a formal event. Polyester ties are affordable and versatile for daily office wear.
Woven and jacquard ties build the pattern into the weave itself, so paisley and medallion designs look richer up close. Other tie fabrics, such as wool, linen, cotton, grenadine, grosgrain and satin, change the texture: wool and linen feel casual, cotton ties suit spring, satin reads formal. Learn how to judge a tie's quality by checking the lining, the stitching and how the tie hangs. Lined ties keep their shape; unlined ties feel lighter in summer.
How to Wear a Men's Tie: Width, Length and Knot
A men's tie looks right when three things line up: the tie width, the tie length and the knot. Get those right and even an affordable tie looks sharp.
Tie Width and Length: Lapel to Belt Buckle
Tie width follows the lapel. A slim lapel on a Slim Fit jacket takes a narrower tie, while a wider lapel on a Modern Fit suit jacket takes a standard tie. Skinny ties read modern and casual; wide ties read traditional.
Tie length follows the belt. The tip of a necktie should touch the top of your belt buckle. Tall men and men who tie a larger knot may need long ties. See our tie length guide for sizes by height, and check the Tip Top size guide for shirt collar and sleeve sizes.
- Tip at the belt buckle, never above or below it.
- Tie width close to lapel width.
- Collar and knot in proportion.
Windsor Knot or Four-in-Hand?
The knot matches the collar. A four-in-hand is a slim, slightly uneven knot that suits most dress shirt collars and most tie fabrics. A Windsor knot is wide and symmetrical; it fills a spread collar and looks formal at weddings and in the boardroom. Both knots look best with a dimple just below the knot.

Complete the Look with Bow Ties and Pocket Squares
A tie is the centre of the ensemble. Accessories finish it. Bow ties, pocket squares, a tie bar, cuff links and suspenders coordinate with your neckties so the whole outfit looks planned.
Bow Ties for Tuxedo and Black-Tie Events
Black-tie dress codes call for a bow tie with a tuxedo. Our bow ties come in classic black for formal wear and in colours that match the groomsmen's neckties, so a wedding party can mix bow ties and ties in one colour. A bow tie also suits prom and casual summer weddings.
Pocket Squares
A pocket square repeats one colour from the tie without matching it exactly. Pick solids, paisley or floral prints to pair with any tie.
Tie Bars
A tie bar or tie clip keeps the tie in place. It sits between the third and fourth shirt buttons.
Cuff Links
Cuff links give a French cuff a formal finish. Pair them with a lapel pin, or add suspenders for a vintage look.
Dress Shirts
The shirt and tie work as a pair. A white or light blue dress shirt is the easiest base; a spread collar suits a Windsor knot.
Men's Suits in Modern Fit or Slim Fit
Fit matters too. Modern Fit gives more room through the chest; Slim Fit tapers from chest to waist.

Tie FAQs
What colour tie goes with a navy suit?
Burgundy is the safe bet. Silver, pink and green ties also match a navy suit; a floral tie or a pink tie suits summer weddings. Avoid a navy tie in the exact shade of the suit.
How long should a necktie be?
A standard necktie runs about 57 to 58 inches long. Once tied, the tip should touch your belt buckle. Taller men, or men who prefer a Windsor knot, may need long ties.
Is a silk tie worth it over polyester?
A silk tie is worth it for weddings, formal events and ties you wear often, because silk knots cleanly and holds a dimple. Polyester ties are affordable and durable, so they suit daily office wear and grad events.
Do you carry ties for boys?
Yes. Tip Top carries boys ties, including clip-on ties for ring bearers and junior groomsmen, sized to match our boys' suits. Pair a boys tie with a pocket square that matches the wedding party.
